Shelter Islands

Historic brownstones, vibrant community, and timeless character.

Shelter Island Through Ria’s Eyes

Ria started summering on Shelter Island in 2003 and opened a high-end beach store at the acclaimed Sunset Beach hotel. The boutique, called Sundays at Sunset Beach, became known for its high-low merchandising and as the kind of place where you could walk in barefoot and sandy and shop for a glamorous day-into-night resort experience. After 7 years, she passed the store on to the hotel but kept the house she acquired and the lifestyle that her growing family had come to love. Over the years, Ria has helped several buyers find homes on the island and often recommends it to clients looking for a peaceful escape from the city.

Accessible only by ferry and nestled between the North and South Forks of Long Island, Shelter Island is known for its beautiful waterfront, relaxed pace, and close-knit community. Often described as the East End's best-kept secret, it's a place where life moves on "island time," encouraging residents and visitors alike to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of island living. For Ria, it's the perfect place to relax, unwind, and recharge from the hustle and bustle of New York City.

The island is nearly one-third Mashomack Nature Preserve, so days here are spent on calm beaches, kayaking or paddleboarding along the bay, hiking wooded trails, cycling quiet roads, birdwatching, or simply enjoying the island's unspoiled natural beauty. While Shelter Island offers a sense of privacy and seclusion, its timeless charm and international community make it feel warm and inviting year-round. There is no shortage of good food and fun events that keep things lively.

In homes, you’ll find a charming mix of Colonial Revival, Shingle-style, Victorian, and cottage architecture. Combining understated luxury with a tranquil waterfront lifestyle, Shelter Island remains one of the East End's most sought-after destinations for buyers looking for a true retreat.
